Polaroid wedding photography – retro weddings

A recovered Polaroid wedding portrait of Ming and Easton at Cline Cellars in Sonoma.

As you can see, this post is a quite different from most of the ones here on my blog.

These photos are recovered Polaroid scans from peel-apart instant film. The film is actually made by Fuji these days as Polaroid filed for bankruptcy protection in 2001 and there are few outlets for old style Polaroid compatible film.

The prints from most of these images went home with the bride and grooms on the night of the wedding, so all I had left was the caustic chemically part that most people throw in the garbage.

Well it turns out that you can save these throwaways and let them dry and then scan in the images with a flatbed scanner. It creates and amazingly beautiful retro look that is achieved without a bunch of filters.

There are a lot of photographers out there today running all sorts of filters on their photos trying to achieve this look – these have not been filtered at all. They are pure in all of their grungy beauty.

Interested in getting some of these at your wedding – ask John what is involved.

Happy New Year everyone!

Sadie and Kyle in the courtyard at Mulvaney’s Building & Loan following their wedding ceremony there. This image, scanned from the usually discarded portion of a peel-apart Polaroid was almost lost. I left it on a table in a back room at Mulvaney’s and someone threw it into the trash. My assistant decided to go look for it and see it he could find it and here it is. Some of the damage to the photo from being in the trash actually adds to the beauty of this image. One of my favorites of late.

This Polaroid portrait of Sadie and Kyle is in Capitol Park in downtown Sacramento.

A fun photo of Diane and Vince at the wedding ceremony area near the Sacramento River at Scott’s Seafood and the Westin Hotel in Sacramento.

A late night Polaroid wedding portrait of Diane and Vince on the steps of Scott’s Seafood in Sacramento. This one is a bit different from the others in that the image became solarized. I have since found out that if you don’t keep the peel-apart throw away part out of bright light then it will continue to develop. I think this turned out pretty well, but in the future I will be sure to take better care of the still wet negatives.

Rachel + Jesse – Purple Orchid Resort Wedding Photos

A photo of Rachel and Jesse out in the olive orchards as the sun was setting on their wedding at the Purple Orchid Resort in Livermore.

Rachel and Jesse were married in October at the Purple Orchid Resort and Spa in Livermore. The weather was threatening to rain and it rained my whole way to the wedding… By the time I arrived in Livermore the weather had cleared and we were all in a great mood for a wedding.

We had lots of time with Rachel and Jesse and were able to get some great portraits of them and the wedding party after their first look and before the wedding ceremony.

The rain managed to stay away until around 7pm and everyone was glad that they had a tent when the rains finally came. In some cultures, rain on your wedding day is a sign of fertility and spiritual cleansing.

Congratulations Rachel and Jesse!

And thanks to Carl Mahoney, who helped as a second shooter on this wedding!

San Francisco Engagement Photos – Kristina + Liam

One of the engagement photos from Kristina and Liam’s Engagement shoot. This one was shot on Pier 7 in San Francisco with the San Francisco Belle paddle wheel boat in the background.

Kristina and Liam wanted some fun engagement photos in San Francisco that weren’t from the usual places, Palace of Fine Arts, Legion of Honor, Golden Gate Bridge shots were not on their list of places they wanted to shoot. They wanted more of neighborhood feel and then some photos on Pier 7 at dusk.

We started out shooting a few photos at The Grove coffee shop in Fillmore and then headed over to the Lyon Street steps in Pacific Heights for some photos there. Our final destination was Pier 7, where we arrived just before dusk to shoot some photos when the lights on the pier turn on. Lots of fun photos!

I’m excited to being photographing their wedding at Ramekins in Sonoma this spring.

Congratulations Kristina and Liam!

Another engagement photo of Kristina and Liam, this one on the Lyon Street steps in Pacific Heights in San Francisco.

We started off the engagement shoot at a cozy (and crowded) coffee shop on Fillmore Street in San Francisco.

Ramekins Sonoma Wedding Photos – Tori + Michael

A wedding portrait of Tori and Michael among the vines on Syrah Hill above Cline Cellars in Sonoma.

Tori and Michael were married at Ramekins Culinary School and Inn in Sonoma. We started out the day at Cline Cellars and did some photos on the grounds as well as a trip up to the top of Syrah Hill for group photos and a spectacular view of the Sonoma Valley below. The leaves were turning colors as fall was upon us. Another beautiful Sonoma wedding – Congratulations Tori and Michael!

Jacobs Family Berry Farm wedding photos – Molly and Adam

A wedding portrait of Molly and Adam at Jacobs Family Berry Farm in Gardnerville, NV.

A few photos from a wedding that I shot a week ago at the wonderful Jacobs Family Berry Farm. I was helping out my pal Stephanie Secrest of Secrest Weddings, who I studied photography in grad school with!

These photos of Molly and Adam were shot on a Mamiya RZ67 (a beast of a camera) on Ilford HP5 black and white film. The film was then scanned resulting in these beautiful black and white images!

Award winning Northern California wedding photography

Big Sur wedding ceremony

A windy wedding ceremony on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean provided this interesting ceremony photo.

I excited to announce that I had three winning photos in the most recent Wedding Photojournalist Association contest.

The image above, of a windy wedding ceremony in Big Sur, won second place in the “Weather” category.

Here are the judge’s comments:

The light and color enhanced the windy moment in this photo. Everything came together to give this frame energy and whimsy.

I really like all the faces and the four blonde heads…

One hardly knows where to begin or end with this whoosh of wind whipping hair to and fro, left to right and beyond to dreams and mirth turning all to a magical gust of wind – nature’s hairstylist at work.

Bride and Groom portrait, Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic.

This image won fourth place in the Bride and Groom Portrait category. It is a portrait of Daniela and Miguel at their wedding in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic.

Judges comments:
I was drawn to the playfulness in this image. The groom has a great expression. Again, it’s a picture I want to linger on.

This final image won an award in the Kids portrait category.
